Earth Day Vancouver

So.  What is Earth Day?  When is it? What’s going on?

All good questions.  Especially because businesses and associations are getting in touch with us now to start planning out their events and to look for advice on collections.

Earth Day is the day that people all over the world set aside to contemplate what’s going on here on this planet and take stock of what they’re doing.  For some, they decide to eat an extra vegetarian meal a month or even a week.  To buy a worm composter, or to take the bus to work once or even twice a week.  All little things that make a difference personally, and things that can be stepping stones to communities, businesses and eventually governments doing more for the environment.

Earth Day is celebrated here in Vancovuer on April 18th this year.  It didn’t orginally start out on this day.  It was devised by a Mr. John McConnell in 1969 in California to be celebrated on the Vernal Equinox.  He chose this day at the end of March because there were equal parts night and day and, it was the moment of astronomical mid-spring in the northern hemisphere, and the astronomical mid-autum in the southern hemisphere.  “Responding to widespread environmental degradation, Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin, called for an environmental teach-in, or Earth Day, to be held on April 221970. Over 20 million people participated that year, and Earth Day is now observed each year on April 22 by more than 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries” (wikipedia: Earth Day)

There is a LOT going on here in Vancouver….  Here are just a couple I found on Google.  But rest assured, as the day gets closer, there will be plenty more.  I know the Vancouver Aquarium is planning on putting something together.  And last year we helped the Strathcona BIA do an e-waste recycling drive taking in 12 yards of computers, monitors, and televisions in just a 6 hour period.

If you or your association or business are looking for partners, then why not drop us a line?!  Now’s the time to do it because it is, after all Earth Day.  I’m certain we’ll be busy!

  2. Look if everyone over the World cold have the iniciactive of planting, no dust, no fire, no polution, no everything that make bad for the planet…I’m sure in the next 5 years the world should back to the year of 100 when the world was beauty and people have their own place so the animals. I’m sure the ozone layer would grow back.

    I hope you understand
